Newcastle United vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' Fulltime
There is the final whistle! Fulltime at St James' Park is Newcastle 0:2 Spurs. Erisken picks up both assists as he played in Dele for the first goal, and Davies for the second.
90' Offside
Eriksen picks out Son's run on the left flank, but the South Korean gets flagged for offside.
90' Post
Son dodges through two Newcastle players and plays in Kane, but his right-footed shot finds the far post and cruelly rattles way from goal, back onto the pitch.
90' Stoppage
We'll see a minimum of three minutes of stoppage time in the second half.
90' Sub
The final sub of the match will be Harry Winks taking the place of Mousa Dembele.
86' Free kick
The left-footed in-swinger from Matt Ritchie gets headed back across the goal, but the volley from Ciaran Clark is on target! It doesn't have the pace or the accuracy to get beyond Hugo Lloris, though, and we maintain the 2:0 scoreline for Spurs.
86' Booking
Ben Davies sees a Yellow Card for a clumsy foul in a dangerous area, down the right wing, approximately 10 yards from the right corner of the penalty area.
85' Sweeper
Lloris, ever the sweeper keeper, is out of his area to clear a ball over the top that almost catch Tottenham's center backs out of position.
83' Passing sequence
A well timed switch of play going left to the right catch Spurs napping, but the final shot from Christian Atsu goes into the side netting, ending the threat.
82' Sub
The second for Spurs is Victor Wanyama coming on in place of Dele Alli.
80' Solo run
Christian Atsu beats his first marker and cuts in, then puts the ball on his left and fires a low shot back across the goal to the far post. Hugo Lloris comes off his line to close the angle, and he makes the diving catch.
79' Cross
Javi Manquillo gets down his right side well and picks out a cross, however Hugo Lloris reads the danger the whole way and is the first man on the end of the cross.
76' Shot
Eric Dier unleashes a long distance right footed effort, but it takes a deflection on the way in and goes wide for a corner. The ensuing restart comes via Heung-Min Son who plays is short, but Eriksen's cross gets caught by Rob Elliot.
76' Sub
Rafa Benitez uses his final sub with Mikel Merino coming on for Dwight Gayle.
75' Forward
Being up a man as well as a pair of goals, Tottenham still continue to press and pin Newcastle back.
70' 1-2
GOAL! Another beautiful network of passing doubles the lead for Spurs! Dele plays in Kane on the corner of the box, who one touches the ball into Eriksen. The Dane has his head up and bags hi second assist of the match as he finds the run of Ben Davies, with the Welshman making no mistakes.
69' Margin
Despite the dominance of possession, only one goal separates the two sides, and Newcastle continue to look dangerous on the counter-attack, specifically through the pacey Christian Atsu.
67' Corner
Eriksen is the man to restart play on the corner, but he can't pick out Toby Alderweireld who had beaten his marker.
67' Fluid
The three behind Kane of Dele, Eriksen and Son generally have a fluid option, though Son has been tucked in on the right more often as of late, and the workrate does win a corner on that side.
63' Shot
Kane and Eriksen again look to catch Newcastle off guard, as Kane plays a lovely angled ball into the path of Eriksen. The latter fires a shot towars goal, but Rob Elliot makes no mistakes and comes up with another save.
61' GOAL!
GOAL! A well worked link up play starting with Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen find Dele Alli inside the penalty area the youngster makes no mistake, toe poking the ball in with his right foot.
59' Cross
Dier overlaps with Kyle Walker-Peters and then plays in a cross, but Heung-Min Son can't get on the far end of it, going out for a Newcastle throw-in on the near sideline.
58' Sub
Mauricio Pochettino makes his first change, bringing on the South Korean national Heung-Min Son for Moussa Sissoko.
57' Challenge
A deflected ball sees Moussa Sissoko go airborn along with Rob Elliot, and the latter seems to have caught the worse of it, but the keeper is back on his feet.
56' Possession
Already firmly ahead in possession, up a man and with the potential for fresher legs, Spurs have settled in for a solid few minuts of moving the ball around and probing for a weakness in the Newcastle defense.
51' Foul
Dele goes down hard after a rash challenge from Matt Ritchie catches him from behind, but he's back on his feet now. Spurs play the advantage and eventually a right-footed volley from Harry Kane finds the target, but again Rob Elliot is there to make the save. Ritchie gets a Yellow for his tackle on Dele.
50' Corner
The corner kick gets played to the near post, but is cleared straightaway without drama.
49' Save
Newcastled seems provoked now, notching thier first shot on goal of the match! Hugo Lloris makes the save, but does allow a corner kick.
49' Last time
The last time Newcastle were down to 10 men at home against Spurs, they won 5:1.
48' Kickout?
After Dele gets called for a foul and goes down, Jonjo Shelvey has a stomp on Dele's ankle while he's on the ground and is shown a straight red!
47' Cross
Moussa Sissoko does well to glide beyond his first marker, then finds Ben Davies in space. The fullback plays in a low cross to the penalty spot, but Ciaran Clark is there to cut the ball off and Chancel Mbemba clears.
46' Shot
Kane gets the ball played to him and he makes a quick turn to free room to shoot, but the defense recovers in time to get a block in before Rob Elliot is forced into action.
46' Second half
Back in action as Spurs gets us going in the second half! No changes were made at halftime for either side.
45' Thoughts
Newcastle has looked brilliant at times going down the left side and attempting to pick on Premier League debutant Kyle Walker-Peters, and the hosts have done their best work to win corners on that side. Spurs have seen their best efforts from open play, and have all of the match's shots on goal. After being forced to used two subs to replace half of his back line, Rafa Benitez has just one more chance to change the game via bench options, however Mauricio Pochettino can bring on all three to reload or reshape the attack for his side.
45' Halftime
We're scoreless at the break here at St James' Park, though both sides have had their half chances.
45' Free kick
Spurs opt to have Eriksen play the cross in, but Mousa Dembele loses the ball springs the Newcastle counter. A leaping Hugo Lloris catch ends the scoring chance after a well placed crossed offered a threat on goal.
45' Free kick
Dele wins a foul in the center of the pitch, about 35-yards out from goal. The shooting range would take something special, but Spurs have players capabale of goalscoring magic.
45' Stoppage
The fourth official has indicated a minimum of four minutes of stoppage time.
45' Long distance
Another long distance shot from Christian Eriksen only finds the hands of Rob Elliot. That's been the best link up play for Spurs thus far.
43' Offside
Christian Atsu gets flagged for offside as he couldn't quite time his run down the left flank properly.
42' Shot
Now it's Dele who takes aim at the net, however his right-footed effort gets blocked almost immediately. He did well to create his own space for the shot, but couldn't navigate all of the defense himself.
41' Shot
Christian Eriksen couldn't find a runner in the box, so instead opts to go for goal himself from outside the 18. His shot is on target, but a diving Rob Elliot is there to maintain the scoreline.
40' Cross
Link up play between Dele Alli, Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies on the left walks the ball through the Newcastle defense, but final cross in from Davies doesn't quite pick out Harry Kane at the penalty spot.
38' Foul
Dele picks up the ball on his right in stride, but his second touch betrays him on the left side, just outside the penalty area. He loses the ball, then his head for a moment and commits a rather needless foul.
35' Corner
Lose some corners, win some corners, as Kyle Walker-Peters this time wins one for Spurs on the right side. Ben Davies plays teh ball in and finds Harry Kane again, but his header gets blocked on the way towards goal.
34' Sub
There's the sub. Florian Lejeune comes off due to injury and Chancel Mbemba takes his place.
33' Corner
Yet another corner for the home side. Newcastle's attacks have been aimed at Kyle Walker-Peters in recent minutes, and they've won set piece chances time and again. No clear scoring chance has materialized just yet, but Spurs are playing with fire.
32' Injury
Lejeune is still down just inside his own half, perhaps three yards from the touch line. It looks like it's a left leg issue, and it seems as though he may be the second injury related sub.
31' Foul
A late tackle from Harry Kane sees the match's first Yellow Card. He won the ball, but his follow through catches Florian Lejeune.
30' Corner
Another corner for Newcastle as Kyle Walker-Peters makes the tackle, but can't keep the ball in. The near post ball gets cleared by Harry Kane on defensive duties, going out for a throw-in still deep in Spurs territory.
29' Corner
Matt Ritchie restarts play with an in-swinging corner, but again Ben Davies is there to clear the ball.
29' Speedster
Christian Atsu flashes his wheels and burns down the left flank, forcing a clearance from Ben Davies and corner for Newcastle.
26' Shot
Some quick and clean passing on Tottenham's behalf finds Christian Eriksen a chance to shoot, but his effort has a bit too much outside curl to tuck in the far post.
26' Corner
The home side play teh corner short, but Hugo Lloris grabs the ball and launches the counter.
25' Breakout
After a shot from Moussa Sissoko gets blocked, Newcastle instantly pushes forward down their left channel, winning a corner after a last second cross gets blocked.
23' Words
Jamaal Lascelles and Dele Alli exchange some words after a hard but clean tackle Lascelles put on Dele. No cards issued, but the referee does come over to sort any issues out.
22' Free kick
Both Ben Davies and Christian Eriksen are behind the ball, but the latter puts his right foot on the ball and cross in an out-swinging ball. Harry Kane puts his header on target, but his momentum is stopped and the pace doesn't bother Rob Elliot, making another drama-free save.
21' Getting forward
Kyle Walker-Peters gets involved in the attack and a long ball would have found him, but a foul from Ciaran Clark instead gives Spurs a free kick down the right flank.
21' Tactic
After starting on the right wing, it seems as though Moussa Sissoko has been instructed by Mauricio Pochettino to shift to the left.
17' Tame shot
Space clears out for Christian Eriksen in the middle of the pitch, but he doesn't catch his shot sweetly, and while it's on target, the sting isn't there to beat Rob Elliot, who makes a routine save.
16' Offside
A foul and a clever set piece from Newcastle almost win a penalty, but the farside linesman had his flag up for offside. With out the mercy of the offside flag, Kyle Walker-Peters would have surely given away a pen after clipping the heels of Jonjo Shelvey.
14' Corner
Spurs win another corner down the right side after some tekkers via Mousa Dembele. Ben Davies plays the corner short to Christian Eriksen who puts the cross in, but Rob Elliot comes out to the 6-yard line and makes the catch.
13' Corner
The corner gets played in by Ben Davies and his left-footed, in-swinging ball finds the head of Moussa Sissoko, but his shot goes wild.
13' Over the top
Now it's Christian Eriksen to play a long ball over the top! He picks out Dele Alli who crosses the ball just outside the 6-yard box, forcing a clearance and winning a corner.
11' Recent
After opening the first few minutes with a press, Newcastle have taken their foot off the defensive pressure, instead settling in and forcing Spurs to break them down.
9' Shot
Mousa Dembele wins the ball in the central midfield, and no Newcastle player is able to stop his run. He finds space just outside of the penalty arc, but his shot is blocked by a covering Jamaal Lascelles.
8' Corner
Spurs play their corner short, but then Christian Eriksen does whip a cross into the box, but it's cleanly dealt with by Florian Lejeune, heading the ball clear of the danger area.
7' Injury
Brief break in play as Paul Dummett pulled up lame, during the run of play, and has already signaled to be subbed off. He's walking off the pitch under his own power, however his day is over as Jamaal Lascelles takes his spot.
6' Corner
Counter-attacking is certainly a tool in Spurs' toolbox, and they showed it in spades there. A quick clearance and tidy pass fromMoussa Sissoko springs Harry Kane who eventually wins a corner after beating the first marker on the left channel.
5' Shot
A quick pass over the top after a throw-in sees Dwight Gayle in on goal! He hits the ball one time, but it goes over the bar.
5' Fans
The home fans are booing every touch of Moussa Sissoko, who of course was sold from Newcastle to Spurs after the former was relegated in the 2015-16 season.
3' High press
A high press from the Magpies is giving Spurs fits in the defensive third, as Tottenham have clumsily given the ball away twice in as many minutes. With an inexperienced fullback on the right in Kyle Walker-Peters and an arguably mercurial player in Moussa Sissoko in front of him on the right wing, look for Newcastle to attack down their own left flank.
1' Early test
And early test for Kyle Walker-Peters, who is making his Premier League debut today. He wins a foul deep in Spurs territory on the right flank after first winning the ball.
1' Kickoff
And we're underway! Opening play we have Newcastle on the ball, attacking right to left!
0' Tunnel
The squads are in the tunnel with the mascots, ready to take the pitch! We're minutes away from kickoff!
0' Defense
Of course, it may not be a goal fest either, as Newcastle's 19 clean sheets were the second most in the Championship last season and Spurs led the Premier League with 17.
0' Players to watch
If you fancy attacking football, keep your eyes on Dwight Gayle, who netted 23 goals and finished as the joint-second top scorer in the Championship, though none of his goals came from the penalty spot. His opposite is none other than reigning back-to-back Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, who tallied 29 total goals despite missing two separate stretches of the season due to injuries.
0' Form
Both clubs ended last season in scorching form, with Newcastle winning their final three matches to finish ahead of also promoted Brighton & Hove Albion by a sole point. Spurs had an extended run of good form, with 12 wins in their final 13 matches, with the 0:1 loss away to West Ham being the only blemish.
0' Squads
Mauricio Pochettino has tinkered with a variety of formations with various back three and back four styles, but today has opted for a 4-2-3-1 of:Hugo Lloris (GK), Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Ben Davies; Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele; Moussa Sissoko, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen; Harry Kane.
0' Squads
Rafa Benitez has Newcastle in his standard 4-3-3 consisting of: Rob Elliot (GK), Javi Manquillo, Florian Lejeune, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett; Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie; Christian Atsu, Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez.
0' Points
If recent history holds, the clubs won't be sharing the points today as all nine of the last Premier League meetings between these two clubs have ended with one side taking all of the points. Newcastle holds the slim 5-4 edge.
0' Head to head
Despite being relegated in the 2015-16 Premier League season, Newcastle managed to do the double over Spurs, including a 5:1 thrashing the last time these two clubs faced off at St James' Park in May of 2016.
0' Record
As this match represents both club's season openers, count on each to bring their best available team forward as three points today could come critical later in the season. Newcastle, fresh off of winning the Championship last season, are set to re-cement themselves in the Premier League and Spurs, title aspirations and all, will need to a better start than over their last two seasons to maintain anything more than simply putting the pressure on.
0' Welcome
Good morning, and welcome to today's English Premier League matchup between the hosts, Newcastle United and the visiting Tottenham Hotspur.
