Earthquakes-Real Salt Lake Preview

It's been a while since both the San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake played an MLS game.

They'll be back in action when the 'Quakes look to end their recent road woes by trying for a third straight overall victory Wednesday night against RSL.

The last time San Jose (13-10-5) and Salt Lake (13-11-4) took to the pitch was Aug. 31, when the Earthquakes rolled to a 3-0 home win over Orlando City while RSL fell 1-0 at Portland. Those results, and what's transpired in the league since then, have San Jose currently sitting fourth in the Western Conference on 44 points, with Salt Lake one point back in fifth.

For the 'Quakes, their back-to-back home wins followed a three-game losing streak - all on the road.

"Even during the tough times with three losses, we still stuck together," star Chris Wondolowski, who has posted three of his 13 goals on the season over the last two games, told the Earthquakes' official website. "We still had the belief, and didn't waver from anything. I wish we had a cushion, but it's nice to have big games and see guys step up in important games."

The focus now for the Earthquakes is to end that season-high three-game road slide and also complete a season double over RSL after Danny Hoesen scored in the 93rd minute for a 1-0 home victory in the reverse fixture on July 6.

San Jose is 0-2-3 at Salt Lake since winning there in September 2013.

While RSL needs to rebound from its most recent defeat and has been shut out in two of the last three league matches overall, it looks to continue the good times at home, where it's amid an 8-1-1 stretch.

Giving up just one goal at Portland and creating some quality chances via 17 shots - six of which were on target - does provide something positive for Salt Lake to take into this contest.

"I think the whole team knows we put in a good effort," defender Justen Glad told Real Salt Lake's official website. "I think we'll use it as momentum for our next game. And, I don't think (the Portland game) is going to deter us in any way, shape, or form."

Salt Lake midfielder Jefferson Savarino has scored all seven of his goals this season at home.
